SETTING:

Enjoy this one poolside at night with the stars bright and the water comfortably cool. Batch #14 is the perfect company whether you are on your own or with a group of people, looking up at the stars and hearing soothing music. You simply feel at home, no matter where you are.

NOSE:

This smells heavy of brown sugar and crystalized caramel on the first inhale with plenty of warmth accompanying. The alcohol burn isn’t intense at all, despite being so high in proof. When I do take deep draws, the alcohol seems reminiscent of nail polish remover, but again, this is quite faint.

I also find a lot of sweet, aged oak here in the nose that comes with a slight haze of barrel char. I wouldn’t say this is particularly fruity or spicy either, though there are still traces of maybe some allspice and apples (though I could be looking for a fruit to pair nicely with the aforementioned caramel). Other fruits could potentially include fruit leather or raisin that has an earthy essence or cinnamon sprinkling over top. Overall, this is very warm and inviting, and I am excited to give it a try.

PALATE:
Stagg Jr. Batch #14 Bourbon Review

– Mouth Feel: It has a bit of a gritty texture to it, as though I can feel it catch on each of my taste buds.
– Balance: This is definitely complex, with each sip bringing out different qualities in the bourbon. It’s sometimes sweet like dark fruit, and sometimes it’s harsh with a burning sweetness.
– Visual: Carrot in color, there is no crown, but plenty of fast-dropping, thin legs.

– Taste: No distinct flavors jump out at me on the first sip, but bourbon warmth is immediately present. Some careful digging brings more of the fruit leather and raisin from the nose, along with stronger notes of allspice, and now also ginger that has a certain sharpness.

Hints of brown sugar and apple are also distinguishable, though they are a bit more buried behind the initial warmth and dark fruit. The caramel is also here, but it has lost its grainy, crystalized structure and seems a lot more smooth in flavor. I can also find a bit of pine nuts that carry a touch of bitterness and plenty of seasoned oak.

The alcohol doesn’t sting much at the tip of the tongue, but the heat kicks in surely at the back of the palate. (I can already tell, this will give me a Kentucky hug eventually, and I feel like I have to constantly be on my guard.) A Kentucky chew dials up the alcohol heat dramatically, and leaves a chlorine, grainy, perhaps clove-y flavor in my mouth. It definitely has heat.

FINISH:

– Lasting Power: Very long. The heat of this one refuses to go away and sits at the back of my palate in particular, waiting for me to let my guard down and give me a Kentucky Hug.
– Between Sips: Apple wood is the predominant flavor between sips and it sits at the sides of palate a great deal. I almost feel as though I could chew it.

– No More: This stays really consistent throughout the pour, with the heat only continuing to build and build. The brininess of the chlorine has escalated a little, but all of the other flavors remain the same.

The empty Glencairn is a warm, stinging oak that is a lot like the nail polish remover from the nose. Nevertheless, aged oak is still present, and the empty glass smells playful and rich.

WORTH THE PRICE?

I think whenever you find a bottle of high proof bourbon at less than $50 USD, it’s a steal, and I’ll continue to maintain that position with this Stagg Jr. offering. This one has plenty of complexity and harshness from a respectable distillery that always will have my attention when new releases are made.

Stagg Jr Batch 13 Review

Brian’s Stagg Jr Batch 13 Review:

30-October-2020

STAGG JR BATCH 13 BOURBON REVIEW:

What a bourbon! For those of you who have wished for a barrel proof Eagle Rare, this is it. The nose is full of dark fruit and woody goodness, and the palate fortifies the earthy aromas. And oh what a finish – my mouth waters at the memory. This bourbon is so good I had to get more when the evaluation pour was emptied. Usually when I prepare a review, I work my way around the Bourbon Flavor Wheel we’ve created. Not so this time; I bounced from side to side, top to bottom and even added more aromas as I tasted this fine elixir.

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

For the evaluation, I shared Glencairns of Batch 13 with my daughter and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer Hannah.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 NOSE:

As I noted above, Stagg Jr Batch 13 is an amazing bourbon; there are so many aromas to test the nose. At first it is dry and hot as it nips with aromas of sherry wine and a potpourri of fragrant dried fruit blossoms, mixed with roasted corn and dusty grain. Then oddly satisfying notes of chocolate covered Maraschino cherries and juicy dried apple blend into humble apple cinnamon pie filling, cloves and a sensation of light rye. Sweets of chocolate cream and vanilla custard greet the nose as maple sugar, buttery woody caramel and chocolate covered roasted pine-nut toffee rise from the Glencairn. Most surprising for me was the sweet aroma of blueberry nectar which came after a solid Kentucky Chew. And at all times, dry, seasoned and hazy, toasted oak waft in on fragrant worked leather. Batch 13 is solid, earthy and deep.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 PALATE:

I enjoyed a nice burn upon taking the first sip. Gone are the floral elements, but the roasted corn and dusty grain remain as do Maraschino cherries joined by dried dark fruit and plump juicy gourmet raisins. And after a a long Kentucky Chew, blueberry nectar. Spices of cinnamon, black pepper and rye dance on the tongue with sweets of melting chocolate coins, dark vanilla, woody caramel and the chocolate covered roasted pine-nut toffee sensed on the nose. And as on each waft dry, heavily seasoned and hazy, toasted oak and harness leather tantalize. Stagg Jr Batch 13 generates saliva even when not in the mouth.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Batch 13 is well blended, viscous, oily and rich, yet rough on the tongue when held in the mouth. In the Glencairn evenly spaced well defined crown which remains after each sip as thin fast dropping long legs return to the burnt amber colored pool.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 FINISH:

Stagg Jr Batch 13 finishes exceptionally long as its flavors linger on the tongue and in my mouth and throat. Blueberries and an undefined juicy dark stone fruit are blended with spices of cinnamon and black pepper and a not unpleasant aftertaste of dark molasses. When the pour is gone, hints of alcohol, dry old oak and barrel char and notes of worked leather waft from the Glencairn.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 RATING: 94/100

Will I buy this whiskey again? YES
(And I would buy more if found at or under $100.00 – double MSRP.)

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I enjoyed the juice neat from a Glencairn glass with father and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer, Brian.

Check out his review for this bourbon here!

SETTING:

With the depth in this glass, I think this pour would be superb on a hot, autumn day in the middle of an apple orchard. Light perfumes invade the senses and the taste-buds long for something bright and sweet to give this spirit the flight it has earned.

NOSE:

Dark fruits are immediately apparent, particularly raisins and other assorted dried offerings, like cherries. I also detect cinnamon and nutmeg. Deep inhales provide a very subtle, almost invisible yeast, making me think of a cinnamon-raisin bagel once I put all of the flavors together. However, such deep inhales do have the power to burn, so exercise some caution and respect.

As the glass continues to warm, I can pull a toffee and caramel essence, sweet smoke and sawdust. Black pepper also comes alive, followed by a light, but wet hay. This is sweetened by just a touch of maple.

I’m sure I could find more flavors if I looked, but I think it’s safe to say that this nose is complex and can boast many flavors. Whether it’s over the top or not, we will learn on the sip.

PALATE:
Stagg Jr. Batch #12 Bourbon Review

– Mouth Feel: There’s definitely a rich and oily texture here. Very nice.
– Balance: I had concerns going in, but this is well-blended and quite enjoyable.
– Visual: Terracotta in color, there are ill-defined legs that coat the glass and drip from a weak crown.

– Taste: Aside from a sharp, short alcohol burn, I feel as though I have just bitten into a fig and pastry snack, only for it to be angrily chased off by dried cherries. Then it begins to morph into this wine-esque sip, thick in body and texture, with both red and green grapes popping in like fireworks.

The spice is still there too, with cinnamon, nutmeg and white pepper combining pleasantly.

First impressions are certainly that this is sweet, almost like a fruit syrup. If I look past these dominant flavors, there are peeled caramel apples. Think of the ones you could get from a fast food joint. No, that’s not as criticism.

I can’t find too much grain, aside from a raw and fibrous chew that seems a bit like a misfit amongst the fruit sweetness, but I’m not disappointed. I suppose if I squint, I can taste some peanuts, which are working to contribute both a savory and sweet element. This pairs with a heavy oak quite nicely.

A Kentucky chew wakes up some maraschino cherries and gives a solid punch of alcohol that tingles so much that it is almost painful. Almost.

FINISH:

– Lasting Power: Surprisingly, this only has a medium finish. I’d expect more from high proof products generally, but it’s still decent.
– Between Sips: Wheat (maybe hay) and some light oak sawdust are the most obvious between sips. There is a twinge of of floral and fruit notes that are indistinct and more like impressions rather than fully-developed presences.

– No More: Plenty of warmth and cherries continue to develop the further I get into the glass, along with green grapes found in fruit cups.

The empty Glencairn might as well be a lumber mill with how much oak, particularly sawdust, is bursting from the glass. I absolutely love this smell.

WORTH THE PRICE?

I think that it is quite rare to find something that is such a high proof from a well-known distillery priced at just $50. If you find a Stagg Jr., I definitely think it’s worth it. If you are just a beginner at whiskey or bourbon, however, wait until you are ready for such a high proof.
