reviewed 29-September-2023

BOOKER’S 2023-01 CHARLIE’S BATCH BOURBON REVIEW:

Booker’s 2023-01 Charlie’s Batch (Charlie’s Batch) is a well balanced and flavorful bourbon. Common notes throughout its aromas, flavors and finish include roasted corn, dark berries, plum, raisin, and fig. Throughout the tasting experience, allspice, cinnamon, and ginger blend with rich vanilla, brown sugar caramel, and light molasses on en earthy foundation of fry seasoned oak, barrel tannins, toasted wood and leather. Charlie’s Batch is a solid offering and in my opinion, a great representation of the brand.

MASTER DISTILLER NOTES

This batch is made up of barrels from four production dates that were aged in four different warehouses. The breakdown of barrel storage for Booker’s “Charlie’s Batch” is as follows:

3% came from the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse Q
17% came from the 4th floor of 7-story warehouse G
24% came from the 4th floor of 7-story warehouse Z
27% came from the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse Z
29% came from the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse 1

The color of this batch is pleasant to the eye with an amber color of a well-aged bourbon. The nose is balanced without too much wood and with hints of oak, toasted nuts, and vanilla. This is the aroma that Dad always looked for in his Booker’s. The taste is balanced with a slight warmth and has a pleasant finish. This batch came out just the way Dad liked it, and I know he would be happy that I named it for Charlie. I hope you enjoy this batch of Booker’s as much as I do.

LABEL INSPIRATION

The first release of the Booker’s® Bourbon 2023 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2023-01 “Charlie’s Batch.” This batch is named in honor of Charlie Hutchens, the craftsman behind the signature wooden boxes that each bottle of Booker’s Bourbon comes in. He is also a longtime family friend and former employee of my dad, Booker Noe.

Charlie started his career working at the Booker Noe Distillery. He was quite the storyteller and would entertain others with his tall tales throughout the workday. He was also one to pay close attention to the details, doing something over and over again until it was perfect – just like Dad was with his whiskey. It’s not hard to see why they got on so well.

After several years, Charlie left the business to open his own cabinet shop with his brother. Charlie handcrafted the very first Booker’s Bourbon wooden boxes in his garage, and he’s created every box for us since. He and his brother have expanded their business to create other fine wood products for different brands and projects in the Beam family, including supplying custom furniture to the new Fred B. Noe Distillery – where Booker’s Bourbon is now distilled.

Charlie still lives near our Booker Noe Distillery and enjoys fishing and vacationing with his family in South Carolina. One of these days, my son Freddie and I hope to get out there to fish with him. Our whole family is so grateful for Charlie as he was one of the first people to help us make Booker’s Bourbon a recognizable brand. Charlie is a very worthy recipient of his own batch, and we are excited to honor him.

ENJOYMENT METHOD FOR THE REVIEW:

On Day 29 of the 2023 30 Bourbons in 30 Days Challenge, the first one and a half ounces of a newly opened bottle mixed with the bourbon in our Infinity Bottle Project. Then, by alternating the pours, four once review amounts went into a Glencairn and a Weck. After posting on social media, my daughter and I enjoyed the bourbon neat as I prepared this review. About 30 minutes had gone by before my first sip.

BOOKER’S 2023-01 CHARLIE’S BATCH NOSE:

Charlie’s Batch has an invitingly warm aroma without overpowering alcohol or ethanol. As the glass is lifted to my nose, the scent of roasted sweet corn and dusty grain, sets the stage for what is to come. Allspice, cinnamon, ginger, and rye blended into dark berries, baked apple compote, currants, dark stone fruit, with hints of plum, raisin, and fig add depth, and make me think of rich apple cinnamon pie fresh from the oven. The aroma continues to unfold as vanilla custard, brown sugar caramel, and a touch of maple syrup, balance in light molasses and subtle pinenut notes. The presence of light oak and barrel tannins complement the bouquet, and are accompanied by toasted wood and earthy undertones.

BOOKER’S 2023-01 CHARLIE’S BATCH PALATE:

Charlie’s Batch delivers a warm and dry flavorful journey. In the initial notes of roasted corn and dusty grain, a subtle touch of apple pipe tobacco builds to prepare my mouth for what is to come. Dark berries, plum, raisin, and fig intermingle, as allspice, cinnamon, ginger, and rye add complexity. With additional sips, I pick up a velvety wave of rich vanilla, which combines with brown sugar caramel and light molasses to cover roasted nuts, introducing another layer of depth. As my tasting continues, dry seasoned oak, barrel tannins, a hint of char, and a touch of leather unite to build an earthy foundation.

Booker's 2023-01 Charlie's Batch

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Charlie’s Batch achieves remarkable balance and when considering the proof, surprises with its smoothness. In my mouth, I do get a mild tickle, however this bourbon is creamy and viscous. In the glass, the pour is equally captivating, as an extremely thin crown gracefully breaks into fast-falling droplets which soon create long, flowing legs to transport left over liquid from the sips back to the mahogany-colored pool.

BOOKER’S 2023-01 CHARLIE’S BATCH FINISH

Booker’s 2023-01 Charlie’s Batch offers a medium-long and dry finish which warms the throat when swallowed. As I savor each sip, roasted corn notes fade into an open bag of apple pipe tobacco. Then, dark berries, plum, raisin, and figs create a rich and fruity backdrop for allspice and ginger to work their magic. A touch of rich vanilla and brown sugar add complexity with hints of dark molasses and dry seasoned oak. Blended within the finish, an essence of barrel tannins, spice, and char contribute to a subtle leather and earthy backdrop as each sip slides down. Left behind in the empty Glencairn, I smell the lingering aroma of heavy seasoned oak sawdust, a bit of chocolate, and warm vanilla; an inviting compliment to the memory of this fine pour.

BOOKER’S 2022-04 PINKIE’S BATCH BOURBON REVIEW:

Booker’s 2022-04 Pinkie’s Batch (Pinkie’s Batch) is a complexly rich and earthy pour. There are multiple layers in its aroma, flavor, and finish. Sweet brown sugar, dark maple syrup, and vanilla stand with new and toasted oak, barrel spice, and oak sawdust to make this batch a delicious pour. Please pour me another finger more.

When you first sip it, your mouth is filled with Booker’s signature vanilla flavor, and it leaves you with a lingering well-rounded finish. LABEL INSPIRATION
Booker's 2022-04 Pinkie's Batch

The fourth release of the Booker’s® Bourbon 2022 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2022-04 “Pinkie’s Batch.” Frederick Booker Noe, better known as Pinkie to his family and friends, was my grandad. To this day I’m actually not sure where Pinkie got his nickname from, but one thing I do know is that he was someone who always followed his passions, just like I do with whiskey making.

A lot of people thought that Pinkie was in the bourbon business – a good assumption to make about someone in our family – but he worked as the vice president of the local bank. That’s not to say he didn’t enjoy drinking bourbon – he actually was a big fan – but the bourbon business just wasn’t his thing like it was for Dad and is for me and my son Freddie. When Pinkie wasn’t running the bank, he also loved to golf. I remember as a little boy that golf was a big part of his life, and he tried to play as often as possible. So much so that he had an indent in his hip from the golf balls he’d keep in his pocket. Pinkie was also an outdoorsman, with a passion for hunting that he passed down to Booker. He often brought Dad along with him to hunt quail, and I know those were always bonding experiences for them.

While Dad and Pinkie had some different interests, they would bond over what brought them together, like hunting or watching a football game. As you try Pinkie’s batch, I invite you to raise a glass to the original Frederick Booker Noe and hope you enjoy it as much as he would’ve. Cheers!

BOOKER’S 2022-04 PINKIE’S BATCH NOSE:

The aroma of Pinkie’s Batch is warm with notions of mild alcohol and sherry difting from the glass. As I breath in I am reminded of a garden in bloom. Then sweet corn roasting on the BBQ adds harmony to the layered fruit richness of blackberry, faint tart apples, plum, and raisin. Allspice and nutmeg pair nicely with the compote, while rye adds a subtle spice. In the aroma, I perceive the essence of a freshly baked pie crust with a whisper of light vanilla. As I continue to nose deeper, simple syrup, brown sugar, honeycomb, and maple sugar add more sweetness for almond undertones. In between the sweetness, new, fresh-cut and toasted oak adds a touch of depth to the simple aromas.

BOOKER’S 2022-04 PINKIE’S BATCH PALATE:

Upon taking the first sip of Pinkie’s Batch, I feel a bite of alcohol followed by a gentle burn. Then I taste soft sherry with a subtle hint of herbal roasted corn. As I continue, dark berries, and stone fruit, fresh plum, and dried prune emerge to create a dark and fruity medley. Allspice, ginger, black pepper, and rye add complexity for a lively and tingling sensation on my palate. Sipping on, I taste the richness of vanilla blended in brown sugar, honeycomb, and dark maple syrup which add sweet depth. With a soft Kentucky Chew, toasted pinenuts provide a surprising twist and ready the palate for old oak and barrel spice with a hint of char to mingle with soaked leather.

Booker's 2022-04 Pinkie's Batch

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
From its prominent fruitiness, and well-measured spiciness, to the touch of sweetness the palate, and woody depth, Pinkie’s Batch is a reasonably balanced pour. Initially, it may feel slightly rough on the gums, roof of the mouth, and tongue, but once acclimated, get a creamy, viscous mouthfeel. When poured into the Glencairn, a broken inverted crown with fast-falling droplets appears. After each sip, a thick curtain hangs in the glass, then eventually breaks into long, flowing legs to transport the liquid left behind back to the flame-colored pool.

BOOKER’S 2022-04 PINKIE’S BATCH FINISH

The finish of Pinkie’s Batch is complex and deep, and lingers long and warm on the palate. I feel subtle herbal notes and a hint of dusty field corn in my throat which add an earthy dimension. Hidden in each sip, dark stone fruit, plum, raisin, and prune evolve with the aid of allspice, nutmeg, and rye to provide additional darkness. As I enjoy the flood of sensations between sips, rich vanilla and woody caramel counter the faint bitterness of raw walnuts. The foundation of entire pour is built on the heavy, robust influence of oak and a hazy barrel char while the essence of leather adds a touch of rustic charm to the finish. And as I raise the empty glass to my nose, the aroma of oak sawdust and the memory of the pour attests to the complexity, making me wish for another sip.

Brian’s Booker’s 2022-03 Kentucky Tea Batch Review:

BOOKERS 2022-03 KENTUCKY TEA BATCH BOURBON REVIEW:

The presence of alcohol and ethanol are apparent in the first wafts and sips of Booker’s 2022-03 Kentucky Tea Batch (Kentucky Tea). Red berries, dark cherry, plum, and raisins along with cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg also greet the nose and palate as do caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, and wood notes. Best of all, I taste the Booker’s funk of peanuts and peanut toffee mixed in oak, toasted wood, and char. This is a delicious pour and I will gladly have another.

This batch was pulled on a hot and humid day in July. The color of this liquid is golden amber, and you embrace the dark, sweet vanilla aroma right away. With just one taste, your mouth is filled with rich and sweet flavors of vanilla. The lingering finish isn’t overpowering, so soon after you’ll want another sip. I made myself a Kentucky Tea with Kentucky Tea Batch, and it brought back memories of my dad sitting at his own kitchen table enjoying his Kentucky Tea with supper.

LABEL INSPIRATION
Booker's 2022-03 Kentucky Tea Batch

The third release of the Booker’s® Bourbon 2022 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2022-03 “Kentucky Tea Batch.” While some may flavor their water with tea leaves, my dad, Booker Noe, loved to flavor his water with bourbon – something he called Kentucky Tea.

As you can imagine, Dad loved the flavor of bourbon, especially his Booker’s Bourbon. Since Booker’s is over 100 proof, the flavor still pulls through when added to water. So, he’d take one part bourbon and four parts water and enjoy his drink. One night, when a reporter was at Dad’s house for supper, he asked why Dad drank Kentucky Tea. Dad quickly replied, “Why would I flavor my water with tea leaves when I can flavor my water with bourbon?” It was that simple – Kentucky Tea was Dad’s drink. He would drink it with a country ham or fish dinner and would say you need to sip the right proportion of Kentucky Tea to really appreciate the food.

As you sip this batch, add a taste of it to your water so you can try Dad’s Kentucky Tea with “Kentucky Tea Batch.” I know that’s how he would’ve liked it. Cheers!

BOOKERS 2022-03 KENTUCKY TEA BATCH NOSE:

The first inhale of Booker’s 2022-03 Kentucky Tea Batch, greets warmly, accompanied by subtle alcohol and a manageable kick of ethanol. Within the blend, a medley blossoms, roasted corn, and the sweet aroma of a roadside fruit stand springs from the glass. I get ed berries, apples dipped in caramel, sweet cherries, a subtle hint of plum, and a mix of gourmet red and yellow raisins, mingling with notes of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. With continued breathng, I am pleasantly surprised by the presence of brown sugared breakfast pastry, frosted with rich buttercream infused with vanilla. Nosing on, more sweet undertones emerge; the essence of red licorice, buttery brown sugar caramel, and a delicate touch of light maple syrup. Finally, a suggestion of peanuts, against the backdrop of freshly cut sweet oak and the hazy aroma of toasted wood, complement earthy nuances reminiscent of books and leather.

BOOKERS 2022-03 KENTUCKY TEA BATCH PALATE:

Kentucky Tea Batch greets with warm alcohol, and the flavor of fresh roasted corn. In the next sips I get a fruit jam of red berries, dark cherry, apricots, plums, and raisins blended with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, pepper, and rye. Now the breakfast pastry aroma I sensed on nose comes alive, as rich vanilla enhances buttery brown sugar caramel and peanut toffee. Going deeper into the glass, sweet, strong oak, counters barrel tannins, toasted wood, and heavy notes of char and newly tanned leather.

Booker's 2022-03 Kentucky Tea Batch

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Kentucky Tea offers a nice balance of sweetness and wood along with a strong showing from its fruit and spice components. In the mouth it tastes rich, and while silken and creamy, it is a bit challenging to hold, owing to its grittiness on the tongue. Above the bowl, a thin fragile crown breaks into fast falling droplets to form long legs. These drain each after-sip quickly back to the mahogany-colored pool.

BOOKERS 2022-03 KENTUCKY TEA BATCH FINISH

Booker’s 2022-03 Kentucky Tea Batch finishes long with lingering warmth. When each sip is swallowed, the memory of roasted corn, dark cherry, plum, and raisin blend with cinnamon, ginger, pepper and rich vanilla. With contemplation, new sensations, in the form of buttery brown sugar caramel and light molasses with crushed dark roasted peanut slide in, much like one might get from a Bit ‘o Honey candy. As the suggestions fade, heavy strong oak anchors barrel tannins, toasted wood, and char.
