Booker’s 2022-02 Lumberyard Batch

Brian’s Booker’s 2022-02 Lumberyard Batch Review:

BOOKER’S 2022-02 LUMBERYARD BATCH BOURBON REVIEW:

Booker’s 2022-02 Lumberyard Batch (Lumberyard Batch) offers aromas of ethanol, herbs, roasted corn, and fruits. Combined with its white pepper and brown sugar notes along with the subtle wood influences, it is easy to experience this bold, sweet, and spicy pour. Each sip is full of dry warmth, and flavors of roasted corn, berries, spices, and richness. For me, the pour is a bit wood-centric, but sweets, fruit and spice do come through in its creamy mouthfeel. As each sip is downed, the closing sensation is long, dry, and warming, with lingering hints of herbs, caramel, and oak. This pour leaves a lasting impression and I’ll gladly enjoy a wee bit more.

MASTER DISTILLER NOTES

The batch is made up of five production dates that were aged in seven different warehouses. The breakdown of barrel storage for Booker’s “The Lumberyard Batch” is as follows:

2% came from the 4th floor of 7-story warehouse X
3% came from the 3rd floor of 7-story warehouse 5
3% came from the 4th floor of 9-story warehouse D
17% came from the 4th floor of 7-story warehouse Z
19% came from the 5th floor of 7-story warehouse Q
28% came from the 4th floor of 7-story warehouse 1
28% came from the 6th floor of 7-story warehouse Z

This batch was pulled during the rainy weeks ahead of the Kentucky Derby. The beautiful amber color of this batch reminds me of the horses that will compete on the racetrack. The aroma is deep with hints of vanilla and oak that lead you back to enjoy it several times to explore its depth. It has a balanced taste with a bit of sweetness and a pleasant finish that will leave you longing for another sip. My dad would be really proud to have a batch dedicated to his hard-working years at The Lumberyard and the experience this liquid delivers with every glass.

LABEL INSPIRATION

The second release of the Booker’s® Bourbon 2022 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2022-02 “The Lumberyard Batch”. This batch is named in honor of my dad, Booker Noe’s pre-distillery years. While his journey to becoming a distiller wasn’t exactly a straight path, it led him to his true passion.

After a short stint at the University of Kentucky, Booker hitch-hiked across America in hopes of joining the Air Force. After being accepted to the Air Force, the local police called his mom to verify his information to be cleared. When Booker’s Mom found out where he was, she convinced him to come home and work at the local lumberyard with uncle Jeremiah Beam, also known as Uncle Jere. Booker was over 6 feet tall and very strong at an early age. He never backed away from physical labor of any kind, which made him a natural fit for the job. Booker gave 110% during his time at the lumberyard, which eventually landed him his first role working at the distillery and from then on, the rest was history.

Since that first day, Booker held just about every job at the distillery and worked his way up to Master Distiller. Booker’s esteemed distilling career wasn’t given to him, he earned it. His experience at the lumberyard shaped the solid work ethic and curiosity he is known for. I am excited to share The Lumberyard Batch with you and hope you will be able to gather with family and friends to enjoy it.

ENJOYMENT METHOD FOR THE REVIEW:

On Day 26 of the 2023 30 Bourbons in 30 Days Challenge, the first one and a half ounces of a newly opened bottle mixed with the bourbon in our Infinity Bottle Project. Then, by alternating the pours, four once review amounts went into a Glencairn and a Weck. After posting on social media, my daughter and I enjoyed the bourbon neat as I prepared this review. About 30 minutes had gone by before my first sip.

BOOKER’S 2022-02 LUMBERYARD BATCH NOSE:

Upon first opening the bottle, the aroma of Lumberyard Batch releases a subtle brown sugar scent. As I bring the pour to my nose, the warmth of ethanol becomes evident. With deep inhales, I detect herbal notes, roasted corn, dusty grain, as well as faint hints of tart apple, dark cherry, and plum. With continuing nosing, cinnamon and white pepper emerge. The experience is bold, sweet, and spicy. Additional sweetness is comes from refined malt, vanilla, simple syrup, soft caramel, honeycomb, and hints of pecans in toffee. Although the wood influence is not overpowering, I do perceive nuanced dry, seasoned oak, hazy toasted wood, and a subtle suggestion of leather in the aroma.

BOOKER’S 2022-02 LUMBERYARD BATCH PALATE:

The first sip of Lumberyard Batch is dry and warm with manageable alcohol burn. Continuing on, I discern the flavors of roasted corn and dusty grain, accompanied by the presence of berries, dark cherry, and dried dark raisins. As the taste unfolds, I taste a medley of spices, including cinnamon and pepper, mingled with rich vanilla, almost burnt brown sugar caramel, and dark molasses baked into a rustic graham crust. This delightful combination harmonizes seamlessly with the notes of roasted nuts, robust seasoned oak, smoky char, and a subtle touch of leather.

Booker's 2022-02 Lumberyard Batch

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Lumberyard Batch exhibits a pronounced balance, leaning towards wood flavors. The pour offers slightly lessened sweetness while its floral, fruity, and spicy elements are fairly evenly matched. With the initial sip, I feel creaminess, followed by a subtle roughness on the back of the tongue and in the throat, ultimately transitioning to a viscous and oily texture as my mouth adjusts. In the glass, I see a quickly dissipating thin crown in which fast-falling legs drain the remaining liquid from each sip gracefully back to the mahogany-colored pool.

BOOKER’S 2022-02 LUMBERYARD BATCH FINISH

The finish of Booker’s 2022-02 Lumberyard Batch lingers for a considerable time, and is characterized by its dry and warming qualities. Although it may not exhibit as many distinctive traits as those found on the nose and palate, I do sense herbs, roasted corn, dusty grain, dark fruits, and subtle hints of cinnamon and pepper. The sweetness of burnt caramel and dark molasses persists, while the seasoned, heavy oak and hazy char gradually recede, leaving behind a faint impression of old leather. As the last drops vanish, the empty Glencairn glass carries the lingering aromas of dark sweets and aged oak sawdust.

Elora and Booker’s 2022-01 Ronnie’s Batch

Hannah here! And introducing the third sipper of the family and guest writer, Elora Dawson. Elora has been sipping with Dad and me since she turned 21 two years ago, and she’s even practiced writing many a review with us! To celebrate this year’s National Bourbon Day (excuse our tardiness), we all thought it was time to include her in our posting adventures. This week, she stars as a guest reviewer on The Sip, and perhaps we will see more of her in the future. For now, enjoy reading her thoughts on a Booker’s Batch (yep – she sips with the best of them ;)).

MUSIC SELECTION:

Booker’s Ronnie’s Batch should be shared with close friends and family and should be used to create happy memories. Poor Man’s Poison’s “A Place for Friends” provides comfort to the listener while encouraging them to revisit those sentimental moments with a nostalgic smile.

Numerous flavors can be detected in Booker’s Ronnie’s Batch, and while it is easy to note the sweet tones that make the drink shine, it is also grounded by the deep fruity and earthy essences. Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity” from his The Planets showcases these traits, with the high strings and woodwinds representing the sugars and the low strings and headstrong brass portray the depth and heat.

NOSE:

This bourbon at first carries several sweet tones, notably caramel, marshmallow, and the artificial essence of cinnamon from Red Hots. However, the mellow scents of white bread and wine ground these strong sugars. There is also a hint of star anise, toffee, peanuts, black licorice, sweetened butter, and pastry that is laced with honey, much like the Latin-American dessert, sopapillas. Fruity aromas, such as apricot jam, grilled pineapples, figs, marmalade, granny smith apples, and rainier cherries counter the other sweet flavors. It is also worth mentioning that herbs and other earthy scents balance the other notes in the dram, and these include dry grass, soil, spear mint, dust, petrichor (the smell of rain), and bibliosmia (the smell of books).

PALATE:
Elora and Booker's 2022-01 Ronnie's Batch

Feel: The dram is thick, dry, and hot as it settles comfortably in the chest.

Balance: Everything within the drink blends incredibly well, almost to where discerning distinct flavors is difficult.

Visual: The color is mahogany, and there is a defined crown with long legs that stick to the glass

The bourbon carries a more nutty and fruity tone with subtle hints of the sweet flavors listed above. Honey, sopapillas, marshmallow, peanuts, soil, apples, marmalade, butter, and caramel once again can be detected in the taste. Other flavors, while subtle, shine through in the drink, which include notes of artificial grape essence, sunflower seeds, vanilla, pear, banana bread, poppyseed, maraschino and bing cherries, charred oak and graham cracker.

Some bourbons in my experience have differing scents and palates, which can strongly affect how I like them. I am a person who usually wants to be able to taste the flavors that I get in the nose, and if I come across one that has a strong difference in aroma and taste, I will most likely not gravitate towards it. This, fortunately, cannot be said about Booker’s Ronnie’s Batch because I was able to find numerous connections between the taste and aroma. Because of this, I was easily able to enjoy this sweet beverage.

FINISH:

The dram has a long finish in both the palate and the feel. Peanuts, apricots, cherries, charred oak, grassy herbs, and a surprising hint of boiled chicken linger in the mouth. It settles snugly in the chest and warns of the possibility of a Kentucky hug if not taken seriously. After a Kentucky chew, hints of warm, sweet sugar and brine present themselves for a generous second before returning to the finishing flavors.

BUY AGAIN/WORTH THE PRICE?

I personally enjoyed Booker’s Ronnie’s Batch because of the plethora of flavors I was able to detect in both the nose and palate. While $90 may seem like an expensive purchase, I would say that it is worth it and should be included in a bourbon collection. Therefore, I would be more than happy to buy it again.

ELORA AND BOOKER’S 2022-01 RONNIE’S BATCH RATING: 92/100

Music has always been a part of my life, whether I am playing or listening to it. Since I started appreciating bourbon, I have been trying to think of possible songs that would be compatible with the dram. There isn’t a single genre that I gravitate to the most, but there are several songs that I love. As a new reviewer to Whiskey for the Ages, I want to be able to provide at least a couple of musical excerpts; one will be representing my musical career in a classical setting, and the other will be from more mainstream genres. I hope you’re able to enjoy these bourbons with my music selections!

BOOKER’S 2022 – 01 RONNIE’S BATCH BOURBON REVIEW:

From the first waft, I could tell Booker’s 2022-01 Ronnie’s Batch (Booker’s 2022-01) is something special. Mouthfuls give an almost hot burn but are full of fruits, spices and sweets. Take heed of the note, this batch is hot, from the nose, all the way through to the finish. While this bourbon may not be for everyone and definitely not for the uninitiated, I am actively seeking a bottle or two for the bunker.

LABEL INSPIRATION

The first release of the Booker’s® Bourbon 2022 Collection is Booker’s Batch 2022-01 ‘Ronnie’s Batch.’ This batch is named in honor of Ronnie Land, a longtime employee at the Jim Beam Clermont and Boston, K.Y. plants, when my dad, Booker Noe, was master distiller. During his 40 year career at Jim Beam, he worked his way up to the Warehouse Manager position. Ronnie was always known to shoot straight with Dad, and Dad put a lot of trust in him because of that.

Ronnie was responsible for keeping inventory of aging barrels, a key part of the bourbon-making process. Back then, we had to track barrel quantities and locations by hand – no computers for that! – and Ronnie knew it all by heart. He also knew exactly where Dad preferred to store his namesake Booker’s barrels and, in time, he was trusted to prepare the samples for Dad to evaluate for the next batch.

Once, Ronnie sent me home with a box of small Booker’s samples for Dad to taste. When Dad saw the samples, he said they weren’t big enough to get a proper sense of the whiskey, so what did Ronnie do? He went back into the warehouses and prepared samples that were notably bigger! Dad was more than pleased and that became the standard sample size Ronnie gave us from then on – and still the size that Freddie and I use today!

BOOKER’S 2022 – 01 RONNIE’S BATCH NOSE:

Alcohol nips at the nose, more so than other Booker’s batches I’ve enjoyed. There are fruit tree blossoms and roasted corn and dusty grain here blended with a masked berry nectar or syrup, some dark cherry, plum and juicy gourmet raisins. This nose is fruity for a Booker’s, but are enhance by dark allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg and rye. With careful nosing I detect some faint bittersweet chocolate chips, then rich vanilla infused buttery dark brown sugar caramel with hints of dark honey and light molasses drizzled over soft nuts. The alcohol, fruit, spice and sweet aromas are blend well and have a solid foundation of sweet air seasoned oak, hazy barrel spice and new tooled leather. This aroma makes me salivate.

BOOKER’S 2022 – 01 RONNIE’S BATCH PALATE:

Mouthfuls of Booker’s 2022-01 give a warm almost hot burn. Upon acclimation, roasted corn and dusty grain mix with a dark berry syrup blend of dark cherries and gourmet raisins. As on the nose, dark spices of ginger, black pepper and rye compliment rich vanilla, more cinnamon, this time more like red hots and sweet and woody brown sugar caramel and a hint of light molasses. There are toasted pecans here too, along with sweet seasoned oak, hazy barrel spice, leather and lots earthy depth.

Booker's 2022-01 Ronnie’s Batch

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Each sip of Booker’s 2022-01 is viscous, rich and oily and incredibly easy to hold for as long as one might wish. But when swished and aggravated, the liquid is capable of giving the mouth an almost hot burn. As I note above there are many aromas and flavors, yet all in balance with one another. When I lower the Glencairn after each sip, many long clinging legs break from the syrupy curtain to return the dregs to the mahogany colored pool. Then inside the glass one can see a thin ring with only a few droplets in the inverted crown.

BOOKER’S 2022 – 01 RONNIE’S BATCH FINISH:

Booker’s 2022-01 Ronnie’s Batch has an exceptionally long finish. It is firey hot in the throat and wants to hug on nearly every swallow. As the heat subsides, fruit tree blossoms trade with sensations of roasted corn, berry syrup, dark stone fruits, and the juice of raisins. Buried in the cinnamon and black pepper heat, rich vanilla and brown sugar soothe the throat and allow the earthy depth of potting soil and leather to take this bourbon home. And when the last drops are gone, the empty Glencairn smells of hazy barrel spice and damp oak.

THE ADDITION OF WATER

Water can often tame big, bold whiskeys and allow aromas and flavors to bloom. The addition of 2-4 drops will not radically lower the proof of the pour. Re-evaluation of Booker’s 2022-01 was done using measured pours and precise amounts of distilled water to measure the effect.

Adding two drops to 1.5 ounces of this bourbon reduces the proof to 123.94 (down from 124.3) but alcohol still nips at the nose. I get an earthy depth coupled with floral notes in each inhale. The spices of cinnamon and rye and caramel sweetness seem diminished on the nose, but not significantly so. The aromas and flavors of roasted corn, dusty grain and blend of dark cherries and gourmet raisins come through as do the red hots and brown sugar caramel. And the air seasoned oak, hazy barrel spice and new tooled leather are present as well. If anything, two drops reduce the heat a bit.

Adding four drops of water to 1.5 ounces of Booker’s 2021-01 lowers the proof to 123.58. Four drops subdues the alcohol on the nose. The blossoms, roasted corn and dusty grain serve to enhance the earthy aromas. The berry aroma becomes dark cherry nectar dusted with allspice, nutmeg and rye. Four drops makes Booker’s 2022-01 sweeter, and allows the buttery dark brown sugar caramel and dark honey to take center stage. In the mouth and throat the heat is more manageable and makes the seasoned oak, hazy barrel spice and leather more defined. Four drops doesn’t really hurt this bourbon but does shorten the finish.

MY RATING: 95/100;
… with two drops 95/100;
… with four drops 93/100

Will I buy this whiskey again? YES
I am a fan of Booker’s and will purchase each batch as they become available, regardless of previous ratings.

To date, the score of 95 is the highest I’ve ever given, a score I have awarded no other whiskey. While the finish has rough edges and each sip wants to burn, Booker’s 2022-01 Ronnie’s Batch is special.
