Old Grand Dad 114 Review

Brian’s Old Grand Dad 114 Review

OLD GRAND DAD 114 BOURBON REVIEW:

While Old Grand Dad 114 is never going to be in my daily rotation, it will satisfy when I’m in the mood for a spicy, woody but non-sweet bourbon. The nose has depth, yet few aromas pass through to the palate and little if any fruit components stand out. Still it peeks my interest. I’m not a cocktail guy, but I think Old Grand Dad 114 would be an excellent mixer as none of its aromas or flavors are overpowering. I like my bourbons neat.

NOSE:

At first waft, Old Grand Dad 114 offers a strong alcohol bite of warm ethanol infused sherry. Roasted corn and dusty grain mix with berries as if in some kind of creamy fruit confection. Added nosing brings a blueberry pancake syrup like aroma and sweet dark cherries, blood orange and raisin blend with cinnamon, cloves, ginger, white pepper and rye. Butterscotch, brown sugar and woody caramel give way to an aroma of chocolate-cream covered, vanilla infused roasted peanut toffee. Then the wood; old seasoned and spicy oak bound but be cautious – With heavy draws, sinus clearing eucalyptus can tickle before the smoky-sweet toasted barrel char and an earthy potting soil settle to old leather.

PALATE:

The nosing makes me salivate, and the first mouthful of Old Grand Dad 114 comes home. I am greeted by strong alcohol and a warm bite as well as roasted corn and dusty grain but only the faintest hints of fruit promised on the nose comes it through and then as a bit of dark cherry and blood orange syrup. Spices of cinnamon, black pepper and rye are strong, almost hiding sweets of woody caramel, and the treat of a bittersweet chocolate-vanilla covered roasted peanut toffee. A plus though – the old seasoned oak and smoky-sweet toasted barrel char redeem this leather filled earthy pour.

Old Grand Dad 114

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
The nose hints to an amazing bourbon, but in the mouth the liquid falls a bit short. The aromas of fruit are gone and so is the sweet. Yet the mouthfeel is viscous and oily as it gives the tongue a tickle. In the Glencairn, the bourbon offers an impressive, evenly-spaced crown after the curtain breaks into wide fast-falling legs to return the liquid to the tawny pool.

FINISH:

The strong alcohol of Old Grand Dad 114 lingers on the palate it is quite manageable. Most of the traits in the aroma are gone and many of the flavors have as well. Traces of roasted corn and dusty grain dance with memories of a single but indistinguishable dark fruit as pepper and rye give way to a slight brininess. Any sweetness is gone, but the old seasoned oak and smoky-sweet barrel char are there. And as one might expect, when the last dram is downed, a little alcohol and a raft of old oak lumber wafts from the empty Glencairn.

MY RATING: 82/100

Will I buy this whiskey again? NO
While Old Grand-Dad 114 ticks my “High Proof”, “Spice” “Wood” and “Earthy” boxes it falls far short of my preferences for “Sweet” and “Fruity” bourbons.

Stagg Jr Batch 13 Review

Brian’s Stagg Jr Batch 13 Review:

STAGG JR BATCH 13 BOURBON REVIEW:

What a bourbon! For those of you who have wished for a barrel proof Eagle Rare, this is it. The nose is full of dark fruit and woody goodness, and the palate fortifies the earthy aromas. And oh what a finish – my mouth waters at the memory. This bourbon is so good I had to get more when the evaluation pour was emptied. Usually when I prepare a review, I work my way around the Bourbon Flavor Wheel we’ve created. Not so this time; I bounced from side to side, top to bottom and even added more aromas as I tasted this fine elixir.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 NOSE:

As I noted above, Stagg Jr Batch 13 is an amazing bourbon; there are so many aromas to test the nose. At first it is dry and hot as it nips with aromas of sherry wine and a potpourri of fragrant dried fruit blossoms, mixed with roasted corn and dusty grain. Then oddly satisfying notes of chocolate covered Maraschino cherries and juicy dried apple blend into humble apple cinnamon pie filling, cloves and a sensation of light rye. Sweets of chocolate cream and vanilla custard greet the nose as maple sugar, buttery woody caramel and chocolate covered roasted pine-nut toffee rise from the Glencairn. Most surprising for me was the sweet aroma of blueberry nectar which came after a solid Kentucky Chew. And at all times, dry, seasoned and hazy, toasted oak waft in on fragrant worked leather. Batch 13 is solid, earthy and deep.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 PALATE:

I enjoyed a nice burn upon taking the first sip. Gone are the floral elements, but the roasted corn and dusty grain remain as do Maraschino cherries joined by dried dark fruit and plump juicy gourmet raisins. And after a a long Kentucky Chew, blueberry nectar. Spices of cinnamon, black pepper and rye dance on the tongue with sweets of melting chocolate coins, dark vanilla, woody caramel and the chocolate covered roasted pine-nut toffee sensed on the nose. And as on each waft dry, heavily seasoned and hazy, toasted oak and harness leather tantalize. Stagg Jr Batch 13 generates saliva even when not in the mouth.

Stagg Jr Batch 13 Review

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Batch 13 is well blended, viscous, oily and rich, yet rough on the tongue when held in the mouth. In the Glencairn evenly spaced well defined crown which remains after each sip as thin fast dropping long legs return to the burnt amber colored pool.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 FINISH:

Stagg Jr Batch 13 finishes exceptionally long as its flavors linger on the tongue and in my mouth and throat. Blueberries and an undefined juicy dark stone fruit are blended with spices of cinnamon and black pepper and a not unpleasant aftertaste of dark molasses. When the pour is gone, hints of alcohol, dry old oak and barrel char and notes of worked leather waft from the Glencairn.

STAGG JR BATCH 13 RATING: 94/100

Will I buy this whiskey again? YES
(And I would buy more if found at or under $100.00 – double MSRP.)

Brian’s Old Forester 86 Bourbon Review:

OLD FORESTER 86 BOURBON REVIEW:

I’ve been on reviewing easier to find bourbons off and on for a while now and Old Forester 86 Bourbon is next up – In fact the bottle has been in the bunker for several months now. On the the review …
When the cap of Old Forester 86 Bourbon was first twisted off, gentle candy sweet aromas wafted from the bottle. In my mouth, an essence of minty freshness mixes with dark fruits and the finish grows as the pour is enjoyed.

NOSE:

Old Forester 86 is quite aromatic upon twisting open the cap. When the whiskey is brought to the nose the soft alcohol fades to light fruit tree blossoms and mint. Tart apple and maraschino cherries blend with spices of nutmeg, white pepper and rye and sweet aromas of orange sponge cake, vanilla custard. Additional candy sweets of vanilla taffy, circus peanuts, butterscotch, and caramel corn blended with hints of cashews and light oak. To my nose, the aromas are quite gentle.

PALATE:

The soft alcohol sensed on the nose is warm and passes to the palate. Roasted corn and dusty grain mix with mint giving Old Forester 86 a certain freshness yet I also taste dark fruits of currants and fig and the sensation of ark dried fruit leather on my tongue. Spices of dark cinnamon, black pepper and rye counter sweets of orange sponge cake, burnt sugar, burnt caramel, dark molasses, and a hint of honeycomb. The is also a trace bitter walnut to go with dry, seasoned oak, and barrel flavors of toasted wood and char. A solid Kentucky Chew is not going to hurt seasoned bourbon drinkers and as I drank my pour I noted the palate is much darker than the nose.

Old Forester 86 Bourbon Review

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
The nose and palate of Old Forester 86 are disjointed; light versus dark yet this is a simple and light bourbon that is a bit watery and at the same time smooth. In the Glencairn a nice crown of clinging droplets gives way to long evenly spaced clinging legs which drop into the russet colored bowl.

FINISH:

The medium long finish of Old Forester 86 lengthens the more I drink. It is a soft alcohol, dry and warm and the dusty grain comes through. The finish is a bit bitter – maybe citrus zest, which is a nice balance to the black pepper and rye. The sweets are gone as dry oak, toasted wood, and barrel char leave a woody aftertaste blending with sensations of leather. When the whiskey is gone, the empty Glencairn presents with sweet woody caramel.

MY RATING: 84/100

Will I buy this whiskey again? NO
While this bourbon is in my wheelhouse and the price point is GREAT, I prefer so many others.
