COOPERS CRAFT 100 PROOF BOURBON REVIEW:

Coopers’ Craft 100 Proof (Coopers Craft) offers inviting aromas of barrel tannin, roasted corn, and a delightful blend of fresh apple, dark fruits, cinnamon and nutmeg. These aromas transfer to the taste and are accompanied by warm flavors of brown sugar caramel, dark molasses, and pinenuts. The liquid turns viscous as it is held and its exceptionally long finish includes tannin, dark fruits, and woody caramel. The captivating look is enhanced by carved barrels, adding the richness of well-worn leather. All the while, its lingering scent evokes memories of freshly stacked oak lumber, readied for drying. Coopers’ Craft 100 Proof Bourbon will likely not have that magical WOW factor for everyone, but at under thirty bucks, getting another bottle or two is a no-brainer for me.

ENJOYMENT METHOD FOR THE REVIEW:

On Day 7 of the 2023 30 Bourbons in 30 Days Challenge, I poured approximately four ounces from a freshly opened bottle into Glencairn glass. After uploading pictures and nosing the pour during the review, about 30 minutes had gone by before my first sip.

COOPERS CRAFT 100 PROOF NOSE:

As soon as Coopers’ Craft is opened, an inviting aroma of brown sugar wafts from the bottle. When the glass is raised, the rich essence of barrel tannin greets my nose. Aromas of warm roasted corn gradually transition into fresh apple, dark fruits, and raisins, adding complexity. And traditional spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and white pepper provide a contrast. The undertone of brown sugared, apple-cinnamon pastry offers a hint of sweetness along with a subtle touch of light vanilla. As I breath in, the aroma deepens to dark toasted pecan blended into bro caramel with a touch of dark molasses. There’s dry sawdust to give the pour a textured earthiness, and an essence of old oak. while toasted wood and barrel char which add to the depth and complexity. The nose is somehow comforting, like a well-worn leather armchair in a dimly lit whiskey bar.

COOPERS CRAFT 100 PROOF PALATE:

Coopers’ Craft delivers a palate of delightful heat and deep, dark robust flavors. I sense subtle barrel tannins, the essence of corn and grain, and the tantalizing presence of currants and dark stone fruit. In the sips which follow, additional dark fruits of raisins and prune are accompanied by spices of cinnamon, black pepper, and rye to dance on the tongue. Amidst the flavor symphony, rich vanilla enhances dark chocolate to create a backdrop of sweet and bitter. The flavors continue to deepen with notes of burnt woody caramel, dark molasses, and dark toffee, now with pinenuts, while dry old oak, and smoky barrel char give wood-forward complexity. As I sip, I feel transported to the same aged leather armchair positioned near a freshly watered potted plant, whose earthiness adds a distinctive and memorable touch. For a sub-thirty dollar bourbon, this is stellar.

Coopers Craft 100 Proof

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Coopers’ Craft showcases impressive balance in its elements of fruit, spice, sweet and wood. The masterful blend is a compliment to the cooper’s addional barrel work. The initial sip gives an impression of an almost watery lightness, however, as the mouthful lingers, an unexpected transformation occurs; the liquid becomes rough and gritty, particularly on the underside of the tongue. Yet, as I savor slowly, I am rewarded — The bourbon turns quite viscous the longer it is held. After each sip, thin, long legs appear, only to leave an elegant trail behind. In the glass, above the dark terracotta-colored pool, a solid inverted crown with clinging droplets appear, then they too, slowly descend.

COOPERS CRAFT 100 PROOF FINISH

Coopers’ Craft 100 Proof Bourbon offers a dry, throat-warming and impressively long finish. As found on the nose and in the palate, barrel tannins are accompanied corn and grain. The darkness of raisins and prune continue with familiar spices of cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and rye. Woody caramel, dark molasses, and dark toffee add depth to the wood-forward profile continue the established theme complementing the memory of dry old oak and a subtle haze of barrel char while leather notes add a touch of sophistication to the final act. As I savor the last drop, the empty Glencairn glass offers up the bourbon’s essence, carrying the lingering scent of drying racks stacked with new oak lumber.

ENJOYMENT METHOD FOR THE REVIEW:

On Day 5 of the 2023 30 Bourbons in 30 Days Challenge, I poured approximately four ounces from a freshly opened bottle into Glencairn glass. While taking pictures and after nosing the liquid it was about 30 minutes before I took my first sip.

BELLE MEADE RESERVE CASK STRENGTH NOSE:

At the first waft of Belle Meade CS, I’m met with fresh, but subtle notes of ethanol. Then my nose picks up the delicate fragrance of fruit tree blossoms, drifting on a spring breeze. As I breath in, I get sweet corn silk, rich red berry nectar, the scent of freshly dipped caramel apple. Further nosing brings Maraschino cherries, hints of plum, the freshness of blood orange and a spice blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and rye. There are also yeasty undertones, much like one might sense in the inviting aroma of apple-cinnamon pastry. The sweets continue with light vanilla custard, caramelized sugar, buttery caramel, and faint maple syrup. As I continue, roasted pine nuts and the dry, old oakiness of of faint barrel char and spice add depth and character, then they too fade into freshness. I am looking forward to my first sip.

BELLE MEADE RESERVE CASK STRENGTH PALATE:

The first sips of Belle Meade CS unfold on my palate with a bit of a bite, followed by welcoming warmth which quickly fades into notes of sherry and roasted corn. As I acclimate, the flavors turn to dark dried fruit leather, made from blueberry syrup, dark cherry, and currants mixed with spices of cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and the bold essence of rye. The confection is bolstered by rich vanilla, buttery caramel and dark toffee filled with hints of pecan. Best of all, a robust foundation of dry old oak, barrel spice, and char along with a touch of luxurious dark leather contribute depth and character.

Belle Meade Reserve Cask Strength

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Belle Meade CS offers a nice balance of fruit, spice, sweet and wood, with a body which is both viscous and oily. After the first sip, my tongue gets a tickle, but the liquid is simple to hold. In the glass, an irregular, broken, and inverted crown, with only a few delicate droplets forms after each sip, after which, long, clinging legs transport the dregs back to the mahogany colored pool.

BELLE MEADE RESERVE CASK STRENGTH FINISH

Belle Meade Reserve lingers on the palate with a gentle throat-warming embrace. Herbal notes mingle with the essence of berry syrup and dry fruits and along with the sensation of cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper, create a delightful contrast of flora, fruit and spice. As the finish deepens, woody caramel and dark molasses contribute a rich sweetness, which is balanced by the presence of walnut, heavy, old oak and subtle barrel char. And in the empty Glencairn, a final touch of leather and damp sawdust drift up, leading me to believe there is some age here as I sense maturity. This is good bourbon.

MY RATING: 92/100

Will I buy this whiskey again? YES
I’ll buy another, but the bottle may be hard-to-find. Green Brier may be making this available as a “Distillery Only” purchase. Or they may be dropping the entire line as their product now has new proprietary labels.

BELLE MEADE STRAIGHT BOURBON REVIEW:

Belle Meade Straight Bourbon (Belle Meade) had a relatively simple but balanced profile. The initial impression is of subtle ethanol with an influence of sherry, accompanied by delicate fruit blossoms and herbal undertones. On the palate, it offers a smooth, buttery texture with a russet color and thick legs in the glass. The finish is warm and lingering with notes of dark fruit, cinnamon, and oak, complemented by a touch of leather. Overall, Belle Meade delivers a nice blend of aromas and flavors.

ENJOYMENT METHOD FOR THE REVIEW:

On Day 4 of the 2023 30 Bourbons in 30 Days Challenge, I poured approximately four ounces of bourbon from a freshly opened bottle into a Glencairn glass. After taking pictures and nosing the liquid, it was about 30 minutes before I took my first sip.

BELLE MEADE STRAIGHT NOSE:

Upon taking the first draw, Belle Meade offers faint but noticeable ethanol notes on which I built the foundation for this review. The influence of sherry is evident, interwoven with the delicate fragrance of light fruit tree blossoms and herbal undertones. As I nose on, fresh picked sweet corn complements a burst of fruit, including red berries, sweet cherries, candied orange, and subtle tropical banana, while spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, white pepper and rye add depth. For a bit of complexity, there’s a yeasty essence, much like one might find in buttery graham cracker crust, accompanied by the memory of the dust in an empty cocoa container. As I explore further, creamy butterscotch-vanilla custard gracefully melts caramelized sugar, buttery caramel, covered with a thin drizzle of light maple syrup. Under the sweets, almond slivers harmonize with lightly toasted warm oak.

BELLE MEADE STRAIGHT BOURBON PALATE:

The flavors of Belle Meade unfold with distinct flavors of blended sweet and creamy vanilla and caramel custard. Delicate notes of ripe red berries, cherries, and citrus fall in to provide balance to be complemented by subtle traces of cinnamon, nutmeg, and white pepper. Then, a touch of buttery toffee emerges, adding a richness to the mix. With more sipping, the taste profile evolves into subtle hints of oak and toasted wood, lending a pleasant warmth to the overall experience.

Belle Meade Straight Bourbon

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Belle Meade offers a harmonious balance of aromas and flavors, allowing each element to contribute without overpowering one another. The first sip is easy-to-hold and its buttery texture glides smoothly across the tongue. A solid inverted crown above the russet-colored pool gives way to evenly spaced clinging droplets. As the liquid settles after each sip, long and thick legs make their appearance, only to dissipate quickly, leaving behind a thin spotty ring.

BELLE MEADE STRAIGHT FINISH

Belle Meade Straight Bourbon delivers a long finish which lingers warmly in the throat. I sense subdued barrel tannins, but what is there imparts depth to herbal mint and dusty grain. As I swallow, the taste evolves into notes of currant, raisin, and prune, mixed with cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper, offering a rich dark fruit complexity with a satisfying kick. Each sip is further complemented by the darkness of nearly burnt sugar and dark toffee along side heavy oak and toasted as a final scrape of leather hangs in the balance.

MY RATING: 86/100

Will I buy this whiskey again? YES
There are some who believe Belle Meade products now have limited availability as Green Brier labels are replacing Belle Meade on store shelves. Still, if found at MSRP, I would consider this to be a value bourbon.
