FOUR ROSES SINGLE BARREL IDAHO PRIVATE SELECT – OBSQ (2019) REVIEW:

There are many expressions of Four Roses Single Barrel – OBSQ and in 2019, the Idaho State Liquor Department purchased a barrel from Four Roses for distribution to its patrons. I feel the limited availability Four Roses SiB ID PS – OBSQ (2019) bourbon would best be enjoyed with a group of seasoned bourbon drinkers. It was challenging to evaluate. The nose and palate are subtle and a lively conversation would be most enjoyable as each person discovers new aromas and flavors.

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

For the evaluation, I shared the juice neat from Glencairn glasses with my daughter and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer Hannah.

NOSE:

As I bring the Glencairn to my nose, brown sugar wafts through the air. When I breath in, a nip of strong alcohol and faint wine tannins dance with fruit tree blossoms as faint, old sweet corn sensations mix with an indistinguishable fruitiness. So well blended, it is hard to say which fruit is at the forefront. In the end, tart green caramel apples and a faint but fresh citrus essence speaks loudest. While the flora is complex, allspice, ginger, black and white pepper and abundant rye abound. The dram seems sweet, but not overpoweringly so as brown sugared pastry, cocoa and light vanilla, blend into buttery toffeed chocolate. There is an earthiness here as well; a strong woodiness of green, fresh cut oak compliment the barrel haze and aromas of newly polished leather boots.

PALATE:

This expression of Four Roses SiB – OBSQ doesn’t drink like a 124 proof whiskey. There is an alcohol bite, but it doesn’t overpower. When held in the mouth, my salivary glands kick into overdrive as many of the aromas come through: herbal notes of roasted corn and the unknown fruitiness, but now more leathery … my brain says unsweetened dried apple but I’m unsure. Spices of ginger, black pepper and rye nearly overshadow the vanilla, brown sugar, dark molasses and chocolate toffee as strong fresh cut oak, hazy barrel char and earthy leather push through. While I cannot say I taste peanuts (or nuts of any kind), this whiskey would elevate a chunky peanut butter sandwich to amazing heights.

Four Roses Single Barrel - OBSQ

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Four Roses SiB – OBSQ is a solidly balanced bourbon. It does give the tongue and mouth quite a tickle when held, but it is still viscous and oily. In the Glencairn, its droplets hang a moment before dropping in long clinging legs to the mahogany pool.

FINISH:

The dram has a slightly warm and medium finish. The herbalness is gone but a sensation of dark fruit leather is more pronounced as cinnamon heat, black pepper and rye linger. Memories of buttery carameled apple pie compliment the earthy haze of oak barrel char. When emptied, the Glencairn smells of oak, cinnamon and sweet evaporated milk butter sauce.

FOUR ROSES SMALL BATCH REVIEW:

The spice and caramel on the nose carry through to the palate and a nice amount of vanilla shines through as well.   I return often to this enchanting and delectable nectar as I enjoy Four Roses Small Batch’s complexity and priced in the low $30 (USD) range, this bourbon is a regular in my go-to “Daily Sipper” rotation.  I highly recommend it.

Note: Four Roses is a unique bourbon distillery.  The following information can be found on the Four Roses website in more detail.  I suggest a visit.  Four Roses has 10 different bourbon recipes.  The 10 recipes are based on different yeast strains and mash bills.

Four Roses uses two different mash bills, identified by the letters “B” and “E”.  Mash Bill “B” is 60% Corn, 35% Rye, and 5% Malted Barley.  Mash Bill “E” is 75% Corn, 20% Rye, and 5% Malted Barley.

The distillery also uses five different yeast strains, identified by the letters “F”, “K”, “O”, “Q”, and “V”.
The ten Four Roses recipes have a four digit identification code, where the first letter is always O, the second letter is the mash bill, the third letter is always S, and the fourth letter is the yeast strain … where “F” provides herbal notes, “K” offers up a slight spiciness, “O” enhances rich fruit, “Q” gives off a floral essence and “V” promotes delicate fruit.
With this in mind, a recipe labeled OBSV would be a “high rye” mash bill using with a slight fruitiness.

FOUR ROSES SMALL BATCH NOSE:

Spiciness definitely comes through on the nose but big caramel and vanilla wins over as it wafts from the glass. The initial aroma is followed by subtle oak and flowery light fruit.

FOUR ROSES SMALL BATCH PALATE:

Caramelly brown sugar and vanilla overtake any oakiness apparent on the nose on first sip. When the nectar lingers in the mouth, peppery rye and sweet dry corn add to the pleasurable experience.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Four Roses Small Batch’s oily mouth feel blends the spice nicely with the sweet.  It is well balanced and full.  The liquid hangs inside the Glencairn then long legs slip back into burnt amber pool.

FOUR ROSES SMALL BATCH FINISH:

Overall Four Roses Small Batch is tremendously tasty and its oakiness is well blended with warming caramel, toffee and sweet grain alcohol and finishes with a medium close.

FOUR ROSES SMALL BATCH FINISHING STRENGTH:

Medium

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

For the evaluation, I enjoyed the juice neat from a Glencairn glass with father and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer, Brian.

SETTING:

This is the bourbon to drink while sitting on a rocking chair outside on a wrap-around porch on a ranch-style house, staring out a growing field of corn. An apple in the hand not holding the bourbon. It’s a peaceful end to a productive day as you watch the sun set in front of you with a dog at your side.

NOSE:

Very little burn on the inhale, likely due to a high corn content. Greeted by a yeasty, bread smell with traces of cinnamon. Other soft scents like caramelly, light fruit manage to overtake the bread scent and mingle with a gentle pine wood, hazelnuts, light vanilla, and maple-sugar candy.

PALATE:

– Mouth feel: pleasant, silky, exceptionally clean
– Balance: solid balance – grounded but also refreshing
– Visual: Russetmuscat coloring with short-lived legs but the juice maintains clinging droplets in the Glencairn

– Taste: Strong wood and grass come through on the first sip while not being too spicy. Nice, soft and warming, but not overly so. Between sips, you get a sweet caramel apple to sink your teeth into, probably a red delicious – emphasis on the delish. With a better Kentucky chew, cloves and black pepper burst in, but fade quickly with the apple being dominant.

This bourbon isn’t looking to confuse. It’s got a solid taste that provides uniqueness; however, there isn’t an intense richness.

FINISH:

– Lasting Power: long with apples
– No More: The last sips were filled with a sweet softness, almost like hay – not at all unpleasant. The empty Glencairn smells of a very gentle oak, but it’s present
