ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I enjoyed the spirit neat from a Glencairn glass with father and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer, Brian.

SETTING:

This is a simple bourbon to enjoy in situations when you won’t be thinking about complexity. As such, I could easily see Evan Williams Bottled in Bond being a spirit to reach for if available on a plane. Look out the window at clouds, the sky, the wing, and just wait patiently to get to your destination. This bourbon will be easy company, for sure.

NOSE:

A sweet, caramelly oak erupts from the glass on the first inhale, and it is quite mild. I also get a bit of dark vanilla, simple syrup, and almond. The alcohol is so gentle, it’s hard to believe that this is 100 proof. This isn’t complex at all, and it’s very difficult to pull any other aromas out from the glass. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and at this price, I’m not expecting to be particularly wowed. It smells good, sweet, and I’m already ready to take a sip.

PALATE:
Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond Review

– Mouth Feel: Slightly raspy. What little rye there is, in the mash, is likely responsible. I like this aspect a great deal, and I think it elevates the overall impression and quality of the pour.
– Balance: Solid. Neither outstanding, or disappointing, but it is surprisingly great for the price.
– Visual: Honey in color, I get a defined crown and slow-dropping, fat legs.

– Taste: This is oaky, with the tip of palate flaring up in a burst of white pepper and rye. The vanilla and almond are still present from the nose, and there may be some light, light cherry blossoms with it. Again like the nose, this is very simple in taste, but what is here, is very enjoyable. The alcohol is also very mild, but I do enjoy that aforementioned hint of spice to liven things up. A Kentucky chew doesn’t hurt, and kicks up some of the spice and cherry, so it’s actually a very entertaining and fun exercise.

FINISH:

– Lasting Power: Short-medium. There’s a playful tingle of heat on the palate, and a little bit of flavor lingering after the sip is gone.
– Between Sips: A bit of the cherry blossoms stick around between sips, but flavors do fade away quickly.

– No More: This stays consistent and enjoyable the further into the glass I go, and overall, I can say I’m very pleased with this bourbon. It’s not often that we find something so inexpensive that has quality quite like this. I’m looking forward to my next pour (perhaps I’ll try it as a follow-up to a higher proof, casual pour in the future).

The empty Glencairn is a soft and buttery oak with a very subtle touch of spice. It smells warm and comforting and very delicious.

WORTH THE PRICE?

It’s a good bourbon, and it’s $15 USD. Absolutely, this is worth it!

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon

Brian’s Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon Review

evaluated on 22-September-2020

EVAN WILLIAMS BOTTLED-IN-BOND REVIEW:

In my opinion, Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon is an fine value whiskey. While not complex by any measure or standard I’ve previously set, the basic bourbon aromas and flavors are just plentiful enough to treat the senses. This bourbon will not likely “wow” anyone, but at 100 proof and for about $15 USD, this would be one for the bunker to calibrate the palate, close out an evening when one more dram is needed, use as a mixer, or to pour for novice drinkers when introducing bourbon.

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

For the evaluation, I enjoyed the bourbon neat from a Glencairn glass with daughter and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer, Hannah.

NOSE:

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond BiB Bourbon smells like a decent bourbon should, but it is not complex. At first waft, it is warm with a touch of ethanol. Faint fruit tree blossoms float as if on the breeze. I get herbal notes of sweet corn as well as ripe berries sweet cherries, and a sensation of an indistinguishable tropical fruit. Spices of pepper and rye mix with simple sugar syrup as it blends into caramel. Further nosing adds light seasoned oak, but this bourbon is simple and clean, maybe a bit weak, but certainly fresh and light.

PALATE:

When the liquid first passes my lips, there is a little bite of warm alcohol. Then Evan Williams BiB’s herbalness asserts itself in roasted corn and assorted fresh green vegetables. The ripe berries and sweet cherries sensed on the nose are there, but faint as cinnamon, black pepper and rye assert themselves in buttery caramel and toffee. Seasoned old oak and hazy toasted wood fades in and out with each sip.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Evan Williams BiB is a simple balance of non-distinct flavors and is mellow, smooth and buttery in my mouth. In the Glencairn, an ill defined crown, gives way to fat, quick falling legs returning the liquid to the russet colored bowl.

FINISH:

Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon has a medium warm finish of herbal green vegetables. Faint black pepper and rye mix nicely with a pleasant but not overly sweetness. As each sip draws down the pour, dry old oak fades into hazy, toasted wood. And in the empty Glencairn, seasoned dry oak with traces of char are easy to coax with simple nosing … making me want more.

MY RATING: 85/100

Evan Williams Single Barrel Review

Brian’s Evan Williams Single Barrel Review

written on 01-July-2018

EVAN WILLIAMS SINGLE BARREL REVIEW:

This Evan Williams Single Bourbon Barrel entry is a nice sip, somewhat light and nothing special, but enjoyable none the less.  This bourbon is wood forward, followed by a pleasant earthy leather aftertaste which diminishes as the dram sits.  For just a few dollars more, there are better bourbons, but this might be a good introductory bourbon to keep on hand.

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I drank this spirit neat, from a Glencairn glass.

NOSE:

Evan Williams Single Barrel has a nice bourbon smell that is not overpowering.  There a nuances of cherry, fig and other dark fruits.  Prolonged nosing brings out dried and well seasoned oak sawdust as well.

PALATE:

This is a peppery juice, in fact there is a bit more heat than one might expect at 86 proof, but it’s nice.  The dark fruit sensed on the nose morphs into dark plum and the oak woodiness is more pronounced.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
This is a well blended tawny colored bourbon.  It is not real complex and has a slightly oily mouth feel.

FINISH:

The finish is only medium in length.  The fruit sensed on the nose is long gone. There are wood forward notes, and a pleasant bourbony aftertaste.

MY RATING: 85/100
