WELLER CYPB REVIEW:

Weller C.Y.P.B. (Create Your Private Barrel) is a fine bourbon; not overly complex, but one that most anyone could easily enjoy. A little sweet candy, some floral notes and nice bourbon warmth.

BACK STORY:

Back in 2015, Buffalo Trace launched their “Craft Your Perfect Bourbon” website (probably in jest) as a way to educate consumers about their whiskey. Bourbon drinkers would get to try their hand (at least, theoretically) at “crafting” their own bourbon. Once on the site, people would be able to determine the grain recipe, watch that recipe go through the distilling process, determine where in the warehouse it would be aged, how long it would age, and the ultimate proof of the bourbon when it would be ready to bottle.

In total, 100,239 people made recipe suggestions. According to Buffalo Trace, an overwhelming number of eager crafters “made” a wheated bourbon, aged on the top floor of the warehouse to be bottled between 90 and 99 proof. In theory, Weller C.Y.P.B. is the culmination of “the peoples efforts” (not withstanding any fuzzy math … how does one cram eight years of aging between inception in 2015 to its release in 2018!?!)

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I drank this spirit neat, from a Glencairn glass.

NOSE:

Sweet butterscotch candy gives way to rich toffee and brown sugar coupled with a hint of sweet ripe berries. The alcohol is there but does not overwhelm.

PALATE:

Bright floral fruit notes greet the tongue, followed by the rich toffee sensed on the nose.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
The 2018 C.Y.P.B. has a nice mahogany and henna coloration, a pleasant oily mouth feel and is nicely blended.

FINISH:

The finish is not overly long and the flavors fade fairly quick, but bourbon warmth lingers.

MY RATING: 87/100

WL Special Reserve Review

Brian’s WL Special Reserve Review:

WL WELLER SPECIAL RESERVE REVIEW:

This introductory screw-top bottle of Weller is decent for an under $20 USD bottle, but certainly nothing special or complex. Consider having this on hand to introduce bourbon to novice friends before wowing them with better offerings. It is important to note, there are so many better bourbons for just $5-10 USD more (Buffalo Trace, Makers Mark, and Weller Antique 107 to name a few).

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I drank this spirit neat, from a Glencairn glass.

NOSE:

Weller Special Reserve’s vanilla and floral blossom sweetness just covers an alcohol nose. Weller Special Reserve has just enough oak for detection but there is little complexity beyond the initial waft.

PALATE:

Bourbon pepper greets the tongue followed by an undefinable sweet component, which is is ever so subtle. Just a hint of oak is left on the tongue.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
W.L. Special Reserve is certainly a younger sibling in the Weller brand. The auburn and polished mahogany coloured juice is just not quite ready to play with its older brothers, although the mouthfeel is quite oily for an entry level bourbon.

FINISH:

Weller Special Reserve finishes quickly with only a residual pepperiness.

Oak & Eden Bourbon & Vine Cabernet Steeped Whiskey Review

Brian’s Oak & Eden Bourbon & Vine Cabernet Steeped Whiskey Review:

written on 20-October-2019

OAK & EDEN BOURBON & VINE CABERNET STEEPED WHISKEY REVIEW:

With great anticipation I opened this bottle of Oak & Eden Bourbon & Vine Cabernet Steeped (O&EB&V) whiskey. The reward: a beautifully dark brown juice with loads of Cabernet wine tannins, and a low dose of alcohol with lots of smoke on the nose, all of which pass along nicely to the palate. The bourbon and wine which make up this whiskey are well balanced and finish long and warm. Read on for my complete analysis.

DISCLOSURE:

This bottle of Oak & Eden Bourbon & Vine Cabernet Steeped Whiskey was generously gifted to me by the producer for the purposes of this review. The donation did not influence my opinion, tasting notes and/or views offered below.

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

For the evaluation, I shared the juice neat from Glencairn glasses with my daughter and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer Hannah.

Check out her review for this bourbon here!

NOSE:

When the Glencairn is brought to the nose, O&EB&V offers plenty of Cabernet wine tannins and only a faint amount of alcohol; just enough to let you know it’s there. Prolonged nosing brings on a dark fruit leather essence, dusty cloves and bitter dark chocolate. There’s also a strong seasoned wood forward aroma which mixes nicely with damp dirt, musty old leather and smokey barrel char … and it works!

PALATE:

The aromas detected on the nose flow nicely into the mouth as O&EB&V drinks like a well aged Cabernet: soft and warm with plenty of deep red wine fruit. On the tongue, bourbon tickles with elements of dusty grain, clove and black pepper. Careful sipping can coax subtle graham crackers and an ever-so-faint dark molasses infused gingerbread. The high concentration of rye makes itself known only after a good mouth swish and chew. Thus enhanced, an earthy smokiness closes in a haze of seasoned barrel char, wet dirt and stirred campfire ashes.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
With a color of brown sherry, the mix of bourbon and wine are well balanced, making for a soft, smooth and pleasantly mellow mouthfeel. In the Glencairn, a veil of thick liquid hangs then droplets suddenly break into toothpick-thin legs which plunge back into the reservoir.

FINISH:

The finish of O&EB&V is lingering and warm. As the dram is downed, Cabernet tannins give way to those of the more earthy Morvedre grape. After each sip is gone the rye peeks in to play. When emptied, the Glencairn gives up its brown sugar and a slightly acrid, but not unpleasant sweet smokiness.
