ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I enjoyed the juice neat in a Glencairn glass with father and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer, Brian.

SETTING:

This is a great spirit to end the business day with. Looking out your shop window at night time to the street intersection. Street lamps are illuminating the world in a yellow-orange glow. Cars are moving lazily, yet contentedly homeward.

NOSE:

Subtle alcohol on the nose that is entirely warming, mixed with baked almonds and dark chocolate. Very soft and not too complex. As the glass warms, more oak and vanilla emerge with just a dash of maple sugar weaving in and out… Coupled MAYBE with banana taffy. It’s an aroma that I guarantee everyone can enjoy.

PALATE:
Weller Antique 107 Bourbon Review

– Mouth Feel: Rich and creamy with a touch of bite.
– Balance: Fair. I think it could be better, but not bad.
– Visual: Auburn in color, there is no crown, but many thin legs that stutter into droplets.

– Taste: Cherries and soft wood, maybe like pine? This could also be the higher wheat content’s doing. The cherry seems a bit candied in nature – I wouldn’t say maraschino exactly, but close. It is soaked in some simple syrup and sprinkled with brown sugar. The brown sugar lends itself later to a s’mores-like-quality, with the chocolate from the nose combining with brown sugar graham crackers and marshmallow for this campfire treat.

But with greater time between sips, the cherries come back to stake their claim.

With a Kentucky chew, the 107 proof slaps your wrist a little with bursts of rye and cloves before fading back to the safer and less aggressive cherry. The Kentucky chew isn’t necessary to enjoy this otherwise, simple bourbon, but the chew does make the mouth water.

FINISH:

– Lasting Power: Long. It leaves the mouth, throat and upper chest area coated in a warm, oaky, cherry haze. Mmm…

– No More: I am finding a brightness that is hitting with the cherry the further I get in the glass. It seems like a citrus zest? I kind of wish it wasn’t there, but I’m not going to pitch a fit. The zest does stick around, but it’s okay. It becomes better as you go. (Let me say I do LOVE this bourbon, despite some of my critiques. I just don’t love it as much as others.)

Oak also becomes MUCH more prevalent in the glass, a welcome addition, and is even dominant.

There is a nuttiness in the empty Glencairn glass – maybe those almonds have made a comeback. Not to fear, there is still soft oak too.

WORTH THE PRICE?

Yes… If you’ve already got a collection, add this one to it. You can definitely be in the mood for it. But if you only keep one or two whiskeys on hand, this isn’t necessary.

Booker’s 2019-02 Shiny Barrel Review

Brian’s Booker’s 2019-02 Shiny Barrel Review:

written on 16-August-2019

BOOKER’S 2019-02 SHINY BARREL REVIEW:

To paraphrase Dickens: Booker’s 2019-02 “Shiny Barrel Batch” is ‘A Tale of Two Bourbons’, but instead of ‘the worst of times’, both are quite good. Although hard to obtain, this bourbon is worth the effort to find. At 124 proof, the second batch of 2019, “Shiny Barrel” is warm, dangerously soft, and has a buttery mouthfeel as it opens. (“G1” – Glencairn at first pour after opening. “G2” – Subsequent pours.)
G1: From the moment the stopper is pulled until the last drop is emptied, the dram is a peanut bomb.
G2: The peanuttiness vanishes. What remains is all Booker’s.

Booker’s 2019-02 Shiny Barrel Review

“Shiny Barrel” references a bygone distillery tradition: Oldtime rackhouse workers thieving tastes straight from aging barrels. When going in, bellies would rub barrels removing dust and shinying them up. These barrels would often be near rackhouse centers where temperatures and humidity were just right. Shiny Barrel is made from two production dates, stored in three different rackhouses and sourced as follows:
43%: 4th floor of 9-story warehouse J
39%: 4th floor of 9-story warehouse E
18%: 6th floor of 9-story warehouse D

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I enjoyed several ounces neat from a Glencairn glass with family, then again later when preparing this review.

NOSE:

G1: There is a little alcohol burn on the nose along with loads of peanuts. More nosing brings a touch of vanilla bean, leathery earthiness and toasted oak.
G2: The nose is classic Booker’s: warm with a blast of heat. More nosing coaxes soft sweet corn silk along with fruit tree blossoms and the ever-so slight citrusiness of lemon and cinnamon infused peach pie. Then vanilla-brown sugar caramel corn blends light chocolate toffee with toasted pinenuts and oak.

PALATE:

G1: At 124 proof, I expected a little hug as the first swallow went down … it never came. But peanuts, peanuts and more peanuts; dried, roasted, unsalted, they’re all there. As the peanuts fade, cinnamon and rye spice blend into vanilla custard, butterscotch, brittle and toffee. Shiny Barrel is fresh and woody with a little char which helps add to its earthy character.
G2: The second tasting was warm with a fiery bite. Carameled, cinnamon peaches blend into soft pear nectar then white pepper and rye spice coat the mouth. Cocoa and vanilla custard are also there along with leather, roasted pinenuts, new toasted oak.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
Shiny Barrel is solidly balanced, first in its peanuttiness then overall in subsequent pours. At first there is a light oily mouth feel, which becomes more buttery as it opens. The dram is velvety soft, warm and easy to drink. In the Glencairn, the auburn-polished mahogany coloured fast-dripping long legs leave an upside-down clinging crown of bourbon droplets.

FINISH:

Shiny Barrel Batch’s long warm finish lingers on the back of the tongue and throat.
G1: Hints of cinnamon spiced peanut brittle mingle with an oaken backdrop before it gently fades away.
G2: The pear nectar sensed on the palate gives way to brown sugar caramel and old leather as its sweet oak fades away.

MY RATING: 88/100

I would have rated Shiny Barrel higher but it changed on me (I was so looking forward to the peanuts nosed and tasted from the first Glencairn).

Booker's 2019-01 Teresa's Batch Bourbon Review

The first batch of 2019 is named in honor of Teresa Wittemer, a 30+ year veteran at Jim Beam, and selected by Booker Noe to work on his namesake brand. During her career she has worked in the quality control department and became well acquainted with Booker’s flavor profile.

ENJOYMENT METHOD:

I drank this spirit neat, from a Glencairn glass with daughter and fellow Whiskey for the Ages reviewer, Hannah.

NOSE:

The nose on “Teresa’s Batch” is signature Booker’s. The faint ethanol burn has a touch of dusty dark berries and fresh citrus rind. Hints of orange spice cake hide cinnamon, ginger, rye, and surprising vanilla taffy notes. The juice is also a bit musty, holding smells of empty peanut butter jars and sinus-clearing new oak barrel aromas, which can be coaxed from the Glencairn.

PALATE:

With a good Kentucky Chew, Teresa’s Batch awakens the tongue with fiery heat and gives the esophagus and stomach an abrupt Kentucky Hug as its ethanol trickles home. The taste is unmistakably Booker’s: dusty blueberry fruit leather, warm allspice, white pepper, and rye. Its regal earthiness blends its nearly masked sweetness of cocoa, burnt caramel, peanut toffee, and dark molasses. As the dram is consumed, hazy toasted oak gives way to a strongly seasoned barrel char.

Balance, Body, Feel and Look:
This is a rich, full-bodied, burnt amber coloured and viscous juice which treats the throat to a warm tickle. Fat droplets cling in the glass, then suddenly become thin legs to slide back into the pool.

FINISH

Teresa’s Batch finishes exceptionally long and closes with a gentle Kentucky hug. While definitely not sweet, warm caramel and spice mix with a dark berry essence. A slight tickle remains as the liquid slips away, leaving a mouthful of toasted oak and a little earthy char. When the dram is emptied, heavy, new oak bounds from the Glencairn.
